Bride raped by cousin-in-law while groom still at ‘kenduri’

MIRI: An 18-year-old bride was raped on the night of her wedding by her husband’s cousin who was drunk.
The woman claimed that her cousin-in-law cornered her and raped her in a room at a timber camp where she and her husband held a grand celebration to commemorate their wedding earlier in the morning.
The incident allegedly happened in the wee hours of Tuesday at the timber camp in the interior of the Batu Niah district some 120km south of here. Her husband works at the camp.
Batu Niah police arrested a middle-age suspect from the camp yesterday morning. He was also said to be a worker at the timber camp.
Miri OCPD Asst Comm Abang Abdillah Abang Othman said police were getting further details on the incident from those at the camp.
“The alleged victim has given her statement to the police. The suspect will be kept in remand for further investigations,” he said.
In her report, the woman said she and her husband threw a grand kenduri at the timber camp to celebrate their wedding together with her husband’s fellow workers and timber camp staff.
The woman said she felt dizzy and tipsy after having too much to drink and went to her husband’s room to rest.
Shortly after she entered the room, she was confronted and raped by the man.
Her husband and his fellow workers were unaware of what was happening as they were still at the party.
